NEWBORN CIRCUMCISION

Circumcision is a common and often deeply personal decision for parents of newborn boys. Whether it’s based on cultural, religious, or medical preferences, it’s important to understand what the procedure involves - especially when it’s done during the first weeks of life.

Circumcision

At Complete Healthcare in Richland, WA, we offer newborn circumcision using the Plastibell technique, a safe and widely used method designed for comfort and ease during healing. If you're considering circumcision for your son, here’s what you should know.

What Is the Plastibell Technique?

The Plastibell technique is most commonly performed within the first 1–2 weeks after birth, when the baby is still in the newborn period. During this procedure:

  • A small plastic ring (the Plastibell) is placed between the head of the penis (glans) and the foreskin.

  • The foreskin is gently tied with a special string around the ring, cutting off its blood supply.

  • Over the next 5 to 10 days, the plastic ring naturally falls off on its own, taking the foreskin with it.

This method avoids stitches and typically results in minimal bleeding, making it a preferred technique.

What Are the Benefits of the Plastibell Method?

  • Reduced Bleeding: The tied-off foreskin minimizes active bleeding.

  • No Sutures Required: Since the ring falls off naturally, there’s usually no need for follow-up procedures.

  • Predictable Healing: Most babies heal quickly with minimal discomfort when the area is kept clean and dry.

What to Expect After the Procedure

  • Mild Swelling or Bruising: This is normal and should resolve within a few days.

  • The Ring Will Fall Off Naturally: It typically separates from the penis within a week.

  • Some Discoloration or Discharge: A yellowish film over the glans may develop—this is part of the healing process and not a sign of infection.

How to Care for Your Baby Post-Circumcision

  • Keep the Area Clean and Dry: Do not submerge your baby in a tub until the ring falls off. Instead, use sponge baths.

  • Apply Petroleum Jelly: This prevents the penis from sticking to the diaper and reduces irritation.

  • Watch for Signs of Infection: Call your provider if you notice redness spreading, foul-smelling discharge, or if the ring hasn’t fallen off after 10 days.

Is Circumcision Medically Necessary?

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) notes that while circumcision has potential health benefits—such as a reduced risk of urinary tract infections, penile cancer, and transmission of some STIs—it is not medically required. Ultimately, the decision rests with the parents, and it’s essential to make a choice that aligns with your values and your child’s best interests.
