A new possibility for treating depression—
that's covered by many insurance companies
Many who suffer from depression have tried multiple medications or therapies in their search for relief. These treatments don’t work for everyone, and they may come with side effects that add to the struggle, or even outweigh the benefits you gain from taking them.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) therapy is a non-invasive, FDA-cleared, and non-drug treatment for major depression. TMS uses focused magnetic pulses, similar to an MRI, to reignite dormant synapses in the brain and decrease symptoms of depression.
Unlike medications that travel through the entire bloodstream and body and may have systemic side effects, NeuroStar TMS focuses treatment directly at areas of the brain known to regulate mood.
What to expect at a TMS treatment

1. Show Up
You'll recline in a comfortable chair—you can read or watch TV during the treatment.
Daily TMS treatments last about 20 minutes.

2. Receive Treatment
Focused magnetic pulses will deliver the therapy to the area of your brain that regulates mood.
Some people report it feels like a tapping, tingling, or warming sensation at the treatment location.

3. Resume Daily Activities
You will remain alert and aware throughout treatment, and you can resume normal activities immediately after.
NeuroStar TMS FAQs

What is NeuroStar TMS?
NeuroStar TMS is a non-invasive FDA-cleared therapy that uses short magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the area of the brain that controls mood. These pulses can have a lasting effect on the brain’s neurotransmitter levels, helping people suffering from depression, anxious depression, and OCD achieve response and in some cases long-term remission from symptoms. Because NeuroStar TMS is not a drug, it doesn’t cause the systemic side effects that are often associated with antidepressants.
Does it work?
Over 7.4 million NeuroStar Advanced TMS treatments have been performed in over 200,000 patients.
A real-world study reported an 83% response rate in patients who completed their prescribed course of NeuroStar TMS treatment. This means that 83% of patients that completed their NeuroStar treatment cycle saw measurable improvement in their depression symptoms. The same real-world study reported a 62% remission rate. This means that 62% of patients that completed their NeuroStar treatment cycle effectively saw their symptoms go away.
Who is eligible for NeuroStar TMS?
NeuroStar TMS is FDA-cleared for both adolescent and adult depression, as well as anxious depression and OCD in adults.
Adolescents: NeuroStar TMS is indicated as an adjunct treatment for adolescent depression, meaning that if you or your loved one is receiving any treatment for depression (including medications or psychotherapy), you may be eligible to receive TMS therapy.
Adults: Many people who choose to receive NeuroStar TMS therapy have not found relieve from antidepressant medications alone. If you have tried one or more antidepressant medications and have not found the level of relief you want, NeuroStar TMS may be a good fit for you.
How can I know if NeuroStar TMS is right for me?
If you suffer from depression, anxiety symptoms associated with depression, or OCD but have not benefitted from your current medications—or are not happy with their side effects—NeuroStar Advanced Therapy may be right for you. NeuroStar may also be a good choice if you have tried switching medications for depression but have still not found remission from your symptoms. Before beginning NeuroStar TMS therapy, you will meet with Dr. Lorenzo to discuss the therapy and see if it is a good fit for you.
Is NeuroStar TMS safe?
An FDA-cleared depression treatment, NeuroStar Advanced Therapy is safe and easy to tolerate. Because it’s non-drug and non-invasive, it does not have the common systemic side effects of medication. NeuroStar does not have any effects on cognition or sleep. The most common side effect associated with NeuroStar is mild to moderate pain or discomfort at the treatment site that typically subsides within the first week of treatment.
Is NeuroStar TMS covered by insurance?
NeuroStar TMS Therapy for depression is covered by most major insurance plans, including Medicare and Tricare, usually after medication options have proven ineffective in your major depression treatment.
How long does NeuroStar TMS therapy take?
A TMS therapy session lasts about 20 minutes, depending on the specific treatment protocol prescribed to you. The number and frequency of sessions may vary based on individual needs and the treatment plan recommended by the healthcare provider.
