MAMMOGRAM

Mammogram FAQs

At Complete Healthcare for Women, we are committed to early detection and proactive women's health. Annual mammograms remain the gold standard for breast cancer screening, and we strongly encourage women to stay current with their yearly exams.

Below are answers to common questions about mammography and breast health.

What is a mammogram?

A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that captures detailed images of breast tissue. It is the most effective screening tool available for early detection of breast cancer, often identifying abnormalities before they can be felt or cause symptoms.

When should I start getting mammograms?

We recommend that women begin annual screening mammograms at age 40, or earlier if they have a higher risk due to personal or family history of breast cancer.

Your provider will assess your individual risk and help determine the right age to begin.

Do I need a mammogram every year?

Yes. At Complete Healthcare for Women, we follow ACOG guidelines, which recommend:

  • Yearly mammograms beginning at age 40 for women of average risk

  • Earlier and more frequent screening for high-risk patients, including those with a family history, known genetic mutations (e.g., BRCA1/2), or a personal history of abnormal breast findings

Annual screening improves the chances of detecting breast cancer at an early, more treatable stage.

What are the signs I might need a mammogram sooner?

Contact us if you notice:

  • A new breast lump or thickening

  • Nipple discharge (especially bloody or clear)

  • Skin dimpling or puckering

  • Changes in breast shape, size, or symmetry

  • Redness, scaling, or nipple inversion

  • Localized breast pain

New symptoms should always be evaluated—even if your last mammogram was recent.

Do you perform mammograms in the office?

While we do not perform mammograms on-site, we offer:

  • Prompt mammogram referrals to trusted local imaging centers

  • Coordination of scheduling and insurance

  • Thorough review and explanation of your results

  • Follow-up imaging and referrals if needed (e.g., diagnostic mammogram or breast ultrasound)

What if I have dense breasts?

Dense breast tissue is common and can make it more difficult to detect cancer on mammography. If your results show dense breasts, your provider may recommend supplemental screening such as:

  • Breast ultrasound

  • 3D mammography (tomosynthesis)

  • Additional follow-up imaging at shorter intervals

Is a mammogram covered by insurance?

Yes. Most insurance plans cover annual screening mammograms starting at age 40 with no out-of-pocket cost. We will assist with referrals and ensure your imaging is completed through an in-network provider.

How do I schedule a mammogram?

At your annual exam, we will:

  • Review your breast health and family history

  • Provide a mammogram referral

  • Help coordinate your imaging appointment

  • Discuss your results and next steps
