Hello, I'm Dr. Richard Lorenzo, an Obstetrician-Gynecologist at Complete Healthcare for Women in Richland, WA. Alongside me is Kortney Jones, ARNP, a highly skilled nurse practitioner specializing in women's health. Today, we're here to discuss a topic that's crucial for every newborn and their parents: vaccinations and medicines given at the time of birth.

The birth of a child is a joyous occasion, but it's also a time when important medical interventions take place to ensure the health of the newborn. These interventions include vaccinations and medications that are administered shortly after birth.

One of the first vaccines most babies receive is the Hepatitis B vaccine. If the mother has Hepatitis B, the baby should get the first shot of the Hepatitis B vaccine within 12 hours of birth. This vaccine protects the baby from a virus that can cause chronic liver disease.

In addition to the Hepatitis B vaccine, newborns also receive a Vitamin K injection. Vitamin K is crucial for blood clotting, and a deficiency can lead to a rare but serious bleeding disorder in newborns called Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB). The injection is the best way to ensure the baby has enough Vitamin K.

Another common medication given to newborns is Erythromycin eye ointment. This antibiotic ointment is applied to the baby's eyes to prevent a type of eye infection caused by exposure to bacteria during delivery.

It's important to note that these interventions are standard and have been proven safe and effective. They are part of the commitment of healthcare providers, like us at Complete Healthcare for Women, to ensure the health and well-being of your newborn.

Remember, every child's health needs are unique, and the vaccinations and medicines given at birth may vary based on specific circumstances. Always consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.

At Complete Healthcare for Women, we're committed to supporting you and your baby from pregnancy through birth and beyond.
